Screening archivists / Chido Houbraken, Joost van Koutrik

Archivists often play a role in films. Archivists from the past, archivists in the future archivists in parallel worlds...

And although we often not see those archivists in the foreground or recognize them, their role has far-reaching implications for the story. They often provide the crucial piece of information or discover that it is missing. They are often professionals (though a bit dull) in a supporting role, and sometimes they are losers or bureaucrats. And they can help or hinder organizations or persons concerned.

Futuristic knights or crime hunters, apprentice wizards, nazis and Stasi agents, MI5 spies, archaeologists, hackers, officials (municipal or intergalactic)... Actually a whole cortege of characters in film history is depending on archivists and their archives. The archives themselves are a rewarding subject for films: they can make or break the protagonist or antagonist.

In this session we try to give an impression of the perception of these archivists and archives in cinematography, using footage from known and lesser-known films and series. What role do archivists and archives have in film culture? How important are the archives for the characters or the story? And what does a film archivist look like?

For the archivist with a heart for cinema!
